As a lifelong Jerome fan, I have always particularly loved Three Men in a Boat, and lost count of the number of times I have read it. Something that has intrigued me for years is that, in some editions, such as the Penguin one, the exchange between Harris and J at the beginning of Chapter 5 (“How could I wake you when you didn’t wake me?”) is cut out, while in others, such as the Oxford World’s Classics, it is left in. I know it’s not the funniest joke in the world, but why leave it out? Can anyone suggest a reason?
This happens more often than not, especially in translated books, those which have had, over time, more than one editor, translator, and/or publisher. Are not book copyrights expired after 100 years published? I’m not sure… but the internet is mainly to blame for these discrepancies in texts, some people being simple thieves and manipulators of other writers’ work, for no good reason, of course… Anyone can download a book nowadays, change a few words, or even whole paragraphs, whatever, and then re-post their versions back onto another website that offers free up/downloading of any book (i.e. Scribd). It is always best to go with a first edition-and an actual book in your hands-when you truly care about reading an author’s original writing! (The Internet is almost going gone, bye bye, so download and save what things you may want to keep… The future is/will be APPS ONLY on tablets and phones. The World Wide Web caught what it was originally meant for, or Covid, lol. It costs around $30,000 to create a simple app today, whereas personal websites are free, with many disappearing every day.
