I have just finished reading John Dickson Carr's biography of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and was surprised to read of him, shortly after the great success of his early Sherlock Holmes stories:

"Then, too, there was the pleasure and excitement of being introduced to the literary world. He was invited to the 'Idlers' dinner, where he met the likeable spectacled Jerome K. Jerome..."

I have never seen a portrait of Jerome with spectacles.  Is this statement an error, or did Jerome make a point of not wearing them for portraits?

Dear Frank. Surely you need look no further than the front cover of Idle Thoughts for a profile of JKJ wearing specs? Why not put yours on and have a look?
Best wishes - Tony Gray.

Dear Tony,

Well, I'l be...  !!!  I must admit, that the front cover of Idle Thoughts never occurred to me as a place to look.  And, of course, now that I look, it is really too obvious.  But what is the source of this portrait?  My comment was made after looking at numerous portraits in copies of his books issued by a variety of publishers.

And now I am REALLY embarrassed - I see that there a couple of portraits with spectacles in the Folio Society edition of My Life and Times.
