Sorry this post is not directly related to Jerome K. Jerome, but I am looking for some obscure information regarding his magazine, 'The Idler', and I thought someone here might be able to help. I have a website about the Victorian writer, Robert Buchanan, and I want to add the article he wrote for 'The Idler' in the series, "My First Book". I have a reprint of the article itself, but I don't know the date, volume, or page numbers relating to its original appearance in the magazine. I'd be very grateful if someone could provide them.

Hi Patrick, It was vol 111 (feb to july 1898) they were called "Undertones" and "Idyls and legends of Inverburn" page 385 (to 396) there are several pictures inc one of Robert Buchanan and his dog, wearing a bowler hat. (robert, not the dog. the dog is, in fact hatless in the picture...)

Sorry to bother you again, but I'm not sure about the 1898 date. The 'My First Book' articles from 'The Idler' were collected in book form and published by Chatto & Windus in 1894, and the Buchanan piece was included.
Was the article perhaps reprinted in 1898?

I can only repeat that the date on my Idler is 1898
It seems very likely indeed to me that the articles in Idler are simply reprints of those earlier ones in My first book, but as I don't yet have a copy of the latter I cant confirm this.
I am now beginning to feel quite stressed......

I don't have the 1898 volumes of The Idler, so cannot say whether the "My First Book" articles were reprinted. But the original appearance of the Buchanan article was in Volume 3, pages 384-96, May 1893.
